James Webb Space Telescope and its advanced design and capabilities

By ESA

The James Webb Space Telescope build by NASA and ESA has recently started observations of our Universe and the results are stunning. The first images of the space telescope were front page news of all major news channels all over the world. In this talk Dr. Giovanna Giardino of the European Space Agency will tell us about the unique space telescope and its advanced design and capabilities. Of course she will also discuss the first results of the telescope and what discoveries are still to be made by this complex machine, giving humanity a completely new look into the wonders of the Universe.

Bio of Dr. Giovanna Giardino After a Masters in Radio Astronomy (Univeristy of Manchester) followed by a PhD in Astrophysics (University of Milano), Dr. Giovanna Giardino joined the European Space Agency (ESA) in 1999 as a Research Fellow in the Science Directorate working on studies of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), the relic radiation from the Big Bang. She remained at ESA Science and Technology Center, in the Netherlands, to support the development of the Planck mission - an extremely advanced satellite, which performed precise observations of the CMB. Since 2010 she has been contributing to the development and operations of the James Webb Space Telescope, working in particular on the NIRSpec instrument: the innovative European Spectrograph designed to capture the spectral signature of primordial galaxies and enable detailed studies of the atmosphere of exoplanets The lecture will start at 1600 and will include a Q&A session up to 1700. After 1700 there is time for drink at own cost.
